Step Up seeks a Human Resources Assistant to bolster support services for individuals experiencing homelessness in Santa Monica. This role crafts personnel records, coordinates volunteer onboarding, and ensures compliance with nonprofit regulations, driving mission impact through precise administration. Gain hands-on experience in a purpose-driven environment fostering community uplift.

Full Description

At Step Up, a Santa Monica-based nonprofit dedicated to ending homelessness through innovative housing and support services, the Human Resources Assistant plays a pivotal role in maintaining operational excellence. This position supports the HR team's efforts to attract, develop, and retain talent essential for serving over 2,000 individuals annually across Los Angeles County. By handling core administrative functions, the assistant enables program staff to focus on direct client impact amid the coastal community's dynamic needs. Daily responsibilities encompass meticulously updating employee and volunteer databases using tools like BambooHR and Google Workspace, processing onboarding paperwork for new hires including background checks tailored to nonprofit safety standards, and coordinating bi-weekly training sessions on topics such as cultural competency and trauma-informed care. The assistant collaborates closely with program directors to resolve payroll discrepancies for field staff, drafts compliance reports for grant audits, and organizes quarterly volunteer appreciation events that boost retention rates. These tasks demand precision in a fast-paced setting where accuracy directly supports funding continuity. Candidates must hold an associate degree in human resources, business administration, or a related field, coupled with at least one year of administrative experience in a nonprofit or service-oriented organization. Proficiency in HRIS platforms, Microsoft Excel for data tracking, and familiarity with California labor laws are essential. SHRM-CP certification is advantageous but not required. Success hinges on exceptional organizational prowess, empathetic communication for handling sensitive employee matters, and adaptability to shifting priorities in a mission-focused nonprofit. Strong analytical skills aid in interpreting staffing trends, while discretion ensures confidentiality in all interactions. Step Up cultivates a collaborative, equity-centered culture where coastal Santa Monica's innovative spirit meets compassionate service. Team members thrive in a supportive office environment with opportunities for professional growth through mentorship and skill-building workshops. Competitive compensation aligns with market rates for nonprofits, complemented by comprehensive health coverage, generous PTO, and flexible scheduling to promote work-life harmony.
