Job Description
Meta's Hardware Systems Engineer Intern in Menlo Park, CA, supports the design, development, and testing of cutting-edge hardware systems powering Meta's AR/VR and data center technologies. Gain hands-on experience collaborating with engineers on innovative projects that shape the future of connectivity and immersive experiences.
Full Description
Join Meta as a Hardware Systems Engineer Intern and play a pivotal role in developing the advanced hardware infrastructure that underpins our world-class products and services. This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking projects in AR/VR, data centers, and AI hardware, directly impacting billions of users worldwide by enhancing performance, reliability, and scalability of Meta's platforms.
As an intern, you will dive into the full lifecycle of hardware systems engineering, starting with assisting in the design and prototyping of system architectures. Daily tasks include analyzing system requirements, simulating performance using tools like MATLAB or Cadence, and troubleshooting integration issues in lab environments. Weekly, you'll collaborate with cross-functional teams—such as firmware engineers, software developers, and product managers—to iterate on prototypes and validate designs against key metrics like power efficiency, thermal performance, and signal integrity. Expect to document findings in detailed reports, participate in design reviews, and contribute to bring-up and debugging of complex multi-board systems. Monthly deliverables may involve supporting qualification testing, optimizing PCB layouts for high-speed interfaces, and presenting progress to senior stakeholders. You'll work closely with hardware validation teams to ensure compliance with industry standards and may assist in vendor interactions for component sourcing.
To succeed in this role, you must be currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, with graduation expected within the next year. Prior coursework or projects in digital/analog design, embedded systems, or RF fundamentals are essential, along with hands-on experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and spectrum analyzers. Proficiency in programming languages like Python or C++ for scripting and automation is required, as is familiarity with hardware description languages such as Verilog or VHDL. Strong foundation in computer architecture, PCIe protocols, and Linux environments will set you apart. No prior professional experience is necessary, but demonstrated passion through personal projects, hackathons, or university labs is highly valued.
Beyond technical prowess, this role demands excellent problem-solving abilities, meticulous attention to detail, and the capacity to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative setting. Effective communication skills are crucial for articulating complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, while adaptability ensures you can pivot between tasks like schematic reviews and system-level optimizations. A curious mindset and eagerness to learn about emerging technologies in hardware engineering will help you excel.
