Job Description
AskBio Inc. seeks a Biomarkers Intern in Translational Medicine to support cutting-edge gene therapy research in Durham, NC. Gain hands-on experience in biomarker discovery, assay development, and data analysis to advance innovative therapies.
Full Description
Join AskBio Inc. as an Intern in Biomarkers within our Translational Medicine team in Durham, NC. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of next-generation gene therapies by identifying and validating biomarkers that predict clinical outcomes and patient responses. Your work will directly impact our pipeline of innovative treatments, accelerating the translation from preclinical research to human trials and ultimately improving patient lives through personalized medicine approaches.
As a Biomarkers Intern, you will assist in designing and executing biomarker studies, including sample collection, processing, and analysis from preclinical models and clinical samples. Daily tasks involve performing ELISA, PCR, and flow cytometry assays to quantify biomarker levels, followed by data compilation in tools like GraphPad Prism or R for statistical analysis. Weekly, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams—such as bioanalysts, clinicians, and computational biologists—to review assay performance metrics like sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility, ensuring deliverables meet quality standards. Monthly responsibilities include contributing to biomarker strategy reports, presenting findings in team meetings, and supporting validation of novel assays for pharmacodynamic endpoints. You may also participate in literature reviews to identify emerging biomarkers in gene therapy and assist in grant preparation by summarizing key data points and trends. Expect to handle 20-30 samples per week, track progress via lab notebooks, and collaborate with senior scientists on project timelines to meet milestones.
Candidates must be enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor's or Master's program in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related life sciences field, with coursework in immunology or genomics preferred. Prior lab experience through internships or academic projects is essential, particularly hands-on work with biomarker assays or translational research. Proficiency in techniques such as qPCR, Western blotting, and multiplex assays is required, along with familiarity with data analysis software like Excel, Prism, or basic R scripting. Knowledge of gene therapy vectors, pharmacodynamics, and regulatory guidelines for biomarkers (e.g., FDA/EMA) is highly desirable. Strong laboratory safety practices and the ability to maintain detailed records compliant with GLP standards are mandatory.
Technical expertise in biomarker platforms including Luminex, MSD, or mass spectrometry, combined with emerging skills in NGS data analysis and AI-driven biomarker prediction, will set you apart. Soft skills such as meticulous attention to detail, effective communication for presenting complex data to non-experts, and adaptability in a fast-paced biotech environment are crucial. You should demonstrate intellectual curiosity, problem-solving prowess, and a team-oriented mindset to thrive in collaborative projects driving therapeutic innovation.
