Job Description

Broward County Government seeks a Chief Real Estate Officer to lead real estate strategies, oversee property acquisitions, and manage a robust portfolio in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Drive impactful development and optimization for public services.

Full Description

The Chief Real Estate Officer (CREO) at Broward County Government plays a pivotal role in shaping the region's infrastructure and economic landscape. Reporting directly to county leadership, this executive position drives strategic real estate initiatives that support public services, community development, and fiscal responsibility. With oversight of a multi-billion-dollar portfolio encompassing government buildings, parks, transit hubs, and commercial properties, the CREO ensures alignment with county goals, fostering sustainable growth and enhancing resident quality of life in one of Florida's most dynamic regions. The CREO leads comprehensive real estate operations, including directing acquisitions, dispositions, leasing, and development projects valued at tens of millions annually. Daily tasks involve reviewing market analyses, negotiating high-stakes contracts with developers and vendors, and conducting site assessments for new facilities. Weekly, collaborate with department heads in public works, planning, and finance to prioritize capital projects, such as office consolidations or affordable housing expansions. Monthly responsibilities include presenting portfolio performance metrics—like occupancy rates above 95%, ROI targets exceeding 8%, and cost savings through energy-efficient retrofits—to the County Commission. Oversee a team of 20+ professionals, including appraisers, property managers, and analysts, while managing vendor relationships and ensuring compliance with zoning laws. Spearhead major initiatives like public-private partnerships for waterfront revitalization, delivering measurable outcomes in asset value growth and operational efficiency. Engage stakeholders through public hearings and strategic planning sessions to balance community needs with budgetary constraints. Candidates must possess a bachelor's degree in real estate, business administration, finance, or a related field, with a master's degree or JD strongly preferred. A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in real estate management, including 7+ years in senior leadership roles within public or municipal sectors, is required. Expertise in Florida real estate law, eminent domain processes, and procurement regulations is essential, alongside proficiency in tools like Argus Enterprise for financial modeling, GIS software for spatial analysis, and Yardi for property management. Professional designations such as CCIM, CRE, or CPM are highly desirable, along with a Florida real estate broker license. Proven track record in managing diverse portfolios exceeding $500 million in value, with demonstrated success in public sector transactions. Success demands exceptional leadership and strategic vision, paired with advanced analytical skills for portfolio optimization and risk assessment. Strong negotiation prowess is critical for securing favorable terms in complex deals, complemented by superior communication abilities to influence policymakers and engage diverse stakeholders. Proficiency in data-driven decision-making using real estate analytics platforms, coupled with deep knowledge of sustainable development practices and public finance principles. The ideal candidate exhibits integrity, adaptability in a political environment, and a collaborative spirit to foster innovation across multidisciplinary teams. Broward County Government, serving over 1.9 million residents, is committed to delivering efficient public services through innovation and inclusivity. Our mission emphasizes equitable growth, environmental stewardship, and fiscal prudence. The Real Estate Division operates within a collaborative framework, integrating with 30+ departments in a professional, diverse work environment that values work-life balance and community impact. Unique aspects include opportunities to influence regional policy and contribute to landmark projects like Port Everglades expansions. Compensation is competitive and not specified publicly, commensurate with experience for this executive role, including performance-based incentives. Comprehensive benefits encompass health, dental, and vision insurance; a robust pension plan through the Florida Retirement System; generous paid time off with 13 holidays annually; and flexible scheduling options. Additional perks feature tuition reimbursement, wellness programs, and relocation assistance, supporting long-term career commitment without remote work provisions. Advancement paths include progression to Deputy County Administrator or specialized executive roles, backed by leadership training and certification support. Professional development emphasizes continuing education in emerging trends like green building and smart cities. To apply, submit your resume and cover letter via the county's online portal, with next steps involving interviews and background checks.
