Job Description

Ophelia seeks a Financial Counselor specializing in insurance verification and eligibility to ensure seamless patient access to addiction treatment services. Join our mission to combat the opioid crisis by managing insurance processes with precision and empathy.

Full Description

At Ophelia, our Financial Counselors play a pivotal role in bridging financial barriers to life-saving addiction treatment. This position focuses on insurance verification and eligibility, ensuring patients receive timely access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder without delays caused by coverage issues. Your expertise will directly contribute to our mission of expanding access to high-quality, evidence-based care across the United States, supporting thousands in their recovery journey while optimizing operational efficiency for our innovative telehealth platform. In this dynamic role, you will conduct thorough insurance verification for prospective patients, confirming coverage details, deductibles, copays, and authorization requirements for MAT services daily. You will collaborate closely with clinical intake teams, patient care coordinators, and billing specialists to resolve eligibility discrepancies, appealing denials and securing prior authorizations weekly. Expect to manage a high volume of patient inquiries via phone, email, and our patient portal, documenting all interactions meticulously in our electronic health record (EHR) system. Monthly, you will generate reports on verification success rates, denial trends, and revenue cycle metrics to inform process improvements. You will also train new team members on compliance protocols, participate in cross-functional meetings with finance and operations, and contribute to payer contract negotiations by providing data insights. Key deliverables include maintaining a 95% verification turnaround within 24 hours and minimizing claim denials to under 5%. Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, with an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, finance, or a related field strongly preferred. A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in medical insurance verification, eligibility determination, or revenue cycle management in healthcare settings is required, ideally within behavioral health or telehealth. Proficiency in insurance portals such as Availity, Change Healthcare, and EHR systems like SimplePractice or Athenahealth is essential, along with strong knowledge of commercial payers (e.g., UnitedHealthcare, Aetna), Medicare, Medicaid, and exchange plans. Relevant certifications such as Certified Revenue Cycle Specialist (CRCS) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) are highly desirable. Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and addiction treatment billing codes (e.g., opioid use disorder specifics) is mandatory. Success in this role demands exceptional attention to detail, analytical skills for dissecting complex payer policies, and proficiency with Microsoft Excel for data tracking and reporting. You will excel with outstanding verbal and written communication to explain coverage to patients compassionately, alongside problem-solving abilities to navigate denial appeals effectively. Organizational skills are crucial for managing caseloads, while empathy and cultural sensitivity support our diverse patient base. Technical competencies include navigating multiple insurance verification platforms swiftly and adapting to telehealth-specific workflows. Ophelia is a pioneering telehealth company revolutionizing addiction treatment, making MAT accessible via virtual care to combat the opioid epidemic. Our mission-driven culture emphasizes innovation, equity, and patient outcomes, with a collaborative team of clinicians, counselors, and operations experts. We foster a supportive, remote-first environment that values work-life balance, continuous learning, and bold ideas to scale impact nationwide. We offer competitive compensation commensurate with experience (salary not specified), comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) with company match, and generous paid time off including mental health days. Additional perks include flexible remote work schedules, professional development stipends for certifications, stock options for full-time employees, and wellness programs tailored to healthcare workers. Our total rewards package supports long-term financial security and personal growth. Ophelia provides robust career advancement, from senior counselor to revenue cycle manager or director roles, with mentorship and tuition reimbursement for advanced degrees. Engage in ongoing training on evolving payer landscapes and leadership development programs. To apply, submit your resume and cover letter via our careers portal, highlighting your insurance expertise. Join us in transforming lives.
