Full Description

The Accountant role at the City of Haines City is pivotal in maintaining the financial integrity of our municipal government. This position involves overseeing accounting processes that directly impact public services, budgeting, and resource allocation, ensuring transparency and efficiency for residents and city operations. Your expertise will help sustain the community's growth and quality of life through accurate financial stewardship. In this role, you will handle daily financial transactions, including processing invoices, reconciling bank statements, and posting journal entries using accounting software. Weekly tasks encompass preparing financial reports for department heads and analyzing variances to identify cost-saving opportunities. Monthly, you will assist in closing the general ledger, generating trial balances, and supporting budget preparation by forecasting revenues and expenditures. You will collaborate closely with finance teams, department managers, and external auditors to ensure compliance with governmental accounting standards like GASB. Key deliverables include accurate payroll processing, fixed asset management, and grant tracking, with performance measured by error-free reports and timely filings. Additionally, you may lead small projects such as implementing new financial systems or training staff on procedures, fostering a collaborative environment across city departments. Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, along with a minimum of three to five years of professional accounting experience, preferably in the public sector. Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) is highly preferred. Proficiency is required in financial software such as QuickBooks, MUNIS, or Tyler ERP, as well as advanced Excel skills for data analysis and pivot tables. Knowledge of Florida statutes, GAAP, and GASB standards is essential, with experience in fund accounting and budgeting for governmental entities being a strong advantage. A valid driver's license and background check clearance are mandatory. Success in this position demands strong technical skills in financial modeling, audit preparation, and ERP systems, complemented by soft skills like meticulous attention to detail, excellent communication for presenting reports to non-financial stakeholders, and problem-solving to resolve discrepancies swiftly. You should thrive in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating integrity, adaptability, and a proactive approach to process improvements. Industry competencies in public finance, including grant compliance and revenue forecasting, will set you apart. The City of Haines City, located in the heart of Central Florida, is a growing community committed to enhancing residents' quality of life through innovative public services. Our mission centers on fiscal responsibility, community engagement, and sustainable development. The finance team operates in a supportive, collaborative structure within a professional office environment, emphasizing work-life balance and public service dedication. What makes us unique is our focus on employee growth within a dynamic municipal setting that values transparency and resident impact. We offer competitive compensation, though salary details are not specified at this time, commensurate with experience. Comprehensive benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, a robust retirement plan through the Florida Retirement System, paid time off, holidays, and wellness programs. Additional perks feature flexible scheduling options, tuition reimbursement for professional development, and opportunities for public service loan forgiveness. Advancement paths include progression to Senior Accountant, Finance Manager, or Controller roles, with ongoing training in governmental accounting and leadership development. Professional growth is supported through certifications, workshops, and mentorship. To apply, submit your resume and cover letter via our careers portal or contact HR for details on next steps.
