Job Description
Join Teach For America as a K-12 Teacher and Education Advocate in Memphis. Welcome from all majors and backgrounds to make a transformative impact on student success in underserved communities.
Full Description
Teach For America invites passionate individuals from all majors and career backgrounds to become K-12 teachers and education advocates in the Memphis Metropolitan Area. This role is pivotal in addressing educational inequities, empowering students to reach their full potential, and contributing to systemic change in education. By joining our corps, you will drive meaningful impact for Teach For America’s mission to expand opportunities for children facing barriers to success.
As a teacher, you will design and deliver engaging lesson plans tailored to diverse K-12 classrooms, differentiating instruction to meet individual student needs and fostering inclusive learning environments. Daily tasks include facilitating interactive lessons in core subjects like math, reading, science, and social studies, assessing student progress through formative and summative evaluations, and tracking key metrics such as academic growth and proficiency rates. Weekly, you will collaborate with school administrators, fellow corps members, and community stakeholders to analyze data, refine teaching strategies, and implement interventions for at-risk students. Monthly responsibilities encompass parent-teacher conferences, professional development workshops, and contributing to school-wide initiatives like literacy programs or STEM projects. You will also advocate for educational equity by engaging families, partnering with local organizations, and participating in policy discussions to amplify student voices and influence district-level changes. Leadership opportunities include mentoring new teachers and leading extracurricular clubs to build student leadership skills.
No specific education degree is required; a bachelor’s degree from any field qualifies you to join our two-year teaching commitment. All career backgrounds are welcome, with no prior teaching experience necessary—Teach For America provides intensive summer training through our rigorous Institute program. Key qualifications include strong analytical skills for data-driven instruction, adaptability to dynamic classroom settings, and a commitment to equity. While not mandatory, familiarity with Memphis education challenges or urban school environments is advantageous. Selected candidates undergo a multi-stage application process including interviews and assessments to ensure alignment with our values.
Essential skills include excellent communication for building relationships with students, families, and colleagues, alongside leadership to inspire and motivate diverse learners. You will demonstrate cultural competency, resilience in high-need settings, and problem-solving to address learning gaps creatively. Proficiency in classroom management tools like Google Classroom, data platforms such as iReady or NWEA MAP, and Microsoft Office supports effective teaching. Passion for advocacy, teamwork, and continuous learning rounds out the competencies needed to thrive.
Founded in 1989, Teach For America is a national nonprofit dedicated to ending educational inequity by building a diverse network of leaders who commit to teaching in high-need classrooms. Our Memphis region fosters a collaborative, mission-driven culture emphasizing innovation, equity, and community impact. Corps members join tight-knit teams supported by dedicated program directors, with a work environment blending school-based teaching and TFA professional development events.
Compensation is not specified but typically includes a competitive teacher salary based on local district scales, plus performance stipends. Comprehensive benefits encompass health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement savings plans like 401(k) matching, and student loan repayment assistance up to $7,500 annually for eligible corps members. Perks feature generous paid time off, flexible scheduling during summers, relocation support for Memphis, and access to a lifelong alumni network offering career transition resources.
Growth abounds through leadership tracks into school administration, policy roles, or education nonprofits. Professional development includes ongoing coaching, conferences, and certifications like state teaching licensure.
