Job Description

Join Job Corps as a Driver, transporting students safely to educational programs, medical appointments, and field trips across the United States. Ensure timely, reliable service while upholding the highest safety standards in a rewarding role supporting youth development.

Full Description

Job Corps is seeking a dedicated Driver to play a vital role in supporting the mobility needs of our young trainees across various centers in the United States. This position is essential for ensuring safe, punctual transportation that enables students to attend classes, vocational training, medical appointments, and recreational activities without disruption. By providing reliable transport services, you directly contribute to the success of Job Corps' mission to empower at-risk youth with education and skills for bright futures, making a tangible impact on their personal and professional growth. As a Driver, your day-to-day tasks will revolve around safe vehicle operation and meticulous route planning. You will transport students to and from Job Corps centers, vocational training sites, medical facilities, and community outings, ensuring all trips adhere to scheduled timelines. Daily responsibilities include conducting pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections, maintaining accurate mileage and fuel logs, and reporting any mechanical issues promptly to the maintenance team. Weekly, you will review and optimize routes for efficiency, collaborate with center coordinators to accommodate special transport requests, and participate in safety briefings. Monthly duties encompass detailed vehicle cleaning, assisting with emergency evacuations drills, and tracking key metrics such as on-time performance rates above 98% and zero safety incidents. You will work closely with educators, health staff, and administrative teams to coordinate pickups and drop-offs, occasionally leading small groups during field trips while enforcing Job Corps conduct policies. In high-volume periods, you may manage multiple vehicles or mentor junior drivers on best practices. Candidates must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean driving record spanning at least three years, including no major violations or accidents. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, supplemented by completion of a certified defensive driving course. Essential technical skills include proficiency in GPS navigation systems, electronic logging devices (ELDs) for Hours of Service compliance, and basic vehicle maintenance such as checking tire pressure, fluids, and brakes. Knowledge of federal DOT regulations, passenger endorsement requirements, and first aid/CPR certification are mandatory. Experience in transporting youth or in educational settings is highly preferred, along with familiarity with fleet management software like Samsara or Verizon Connect. Success in this role demands a blend of technical prowess and interpersonal strengths. Technically, you should excel in vehicle operation under varying weather conditions, route optimization using tools like Google Maps API integrations, and adherence to telematics reporting. Soft skills are paramount: exceptional communication for interacting with diverse student populations, situational awareness for real-time hazard assessment, and a calm demeanor during stressful scenarios like traffic delays or behavioral issues. Strong problem-solving abilities, time management, and a commitment to safety culture will set you apart, alongside cultural sensitivity to support Job Corps' multicultural trainees. Job Corps, operated by the U.S. Department of Labor, is a no-cost residential education and career training program for young adults aged 16-24.
