Job Description
Cisco's Hardware Engineer I Co-op in San Francisco offers students hands-on experience designing and testing cutting-edge networking hardware. Collaborate with expert teams to innovate solutions powering global connectivity.
Full Description
Join Cisco as a Hardware Engineer I Co-op and dive into the heart of innovation where your contributions shape the future of networking technology. This role is pivotal in developing reliable, high-performance hardware that supports Cisco's mission to power an inclusive future for all, impacting millions through seamless connectivity and transformative solutions. As a co-op, you'll gain invaluable real-world experience while contributing to projects that drive the company's leadership in the tech industry.
In this dynamic position, you'll assist in designing schematic layouts for printed circuit boards, utilizing tools like Cadence Allegro and Mentor Graphics Expedition to create precise hardware prototypes. Daily tasks include performing signal integrity simulations with tools such as HyperLynx, conducting PCIe compliance testing, and troubleshooting issues using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG debuggers. Weekly, you'll collaborate with cross-functional teams including firmware engineers, systems architects, and quality assurance specialists to validate designs through bring-up and integration testing. Monthly deliverables might involve documenting test results, analyzing performance metrics like power consumption and thermal profiles, and iterating on designs based on lab feedback. You'll also support board spin reviews, contribute to design verification plans, and participate in lab maintenance to ensure efficient project workflows. Expect hands-on involvement in high-speed digital design projects, from concept to prototype, fostering your growth in a collaborative environment.
To succeed, you must be currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, with graduation expected within 1-2 years. Prior coursework or projects in digital design, PCB layout, and signal integrity are essential, along with familiarity with high-speed interfaces like PCIe and DDR. Proficiency in EDA tools such as Cadence Allegro, Mentor Graphics, and simulation software like HyperLynx is required. Hands-on experience with lab equipment including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers is necessary, as is basic knowledge of embedded systems and scripting in Python or TCL for automation. Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail will set you apart in this technical role.
Beyond technical prowess, you'll thrive with excellent analytical skills to dissect complex hardware issues, strong communication to articulate findings in team meetings, and a collaborative mindset for working with diverse stakeholders. Adaptability is key in a fast-paced lab setting, paired with a passion for hardware innovation and eagerness to learn Cisco's methodologies. These competencies will enable you to contribute effectively from day one.
Cisco, a global leader in networking and cybersecurity, powers the internet with innovative hardware and software solutions connecting over 80% of the world's internet traffic. Our mission is to embrace digital transformation, fostering an inclusive culture that values diversity, innovation, and employee well-being. The hardware engineering team in San Francisco operates in a modern, collaborative lab environment with agile methodologies, mentorship programs, and a flat structure encouraging idea-sharing across disciplines.
Compensation for this co-op role is competitive and not specified in the posting, reflecting market rates for top engineering talent. Cisco offers comprehensive benefits including health, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) matching, and life/disability coverage. Enjoy generous paid time off, flexible co-op schedules accommodating school, tuition reimbursement, and perks like wellness programs, employee stock purchase plans, and access to on-site fitness centers. Remote work options may be available post-onboarding, with hybrid flexibility.
This co-op opens doors to full-time opportunities at Cisco upon graduation, with clear paths to senior hardware roles and leadership tracks. Benefit from world-class training, certifications in EDA tools, and networking events. To apply, submit your resume and transcript via Cisco's careers portal—next steps include technical interviews and a lab assessment.
