Job Description
Cisco is seeking a Hardware Engineer II Co-op in San Jose, CA, to support the design, development, and testing of cutting-edge networking hardware. Gain hands-on experience collaborating with expert teams on innovative projects that shape global connectivity.
Full Description
Join Cisco as a Hardware Engineer II Co-op and play a vital role in pioneering the next generation of networking hardware that powers the internet's backbone. This position offers students a unique opportunity to contribute to high-impact projects, driving innovation in hardware design and deployment that supports millions of users worldwide and reinforces Cisco's leadership in digital transformation.
As a Hardware Engineer II Co-op, your day-to-day will involve assisting in the design and prototyping of advanced circuit boards and systems for routers and switches. You will collaborate daily with senior engineers to simulate and validate hardware performance using tools like Cadence and SPICE, ensuring reliability under real-world conditions. Weekly tasks include participating in design reviews, troubleshooting PCB layouts, and conducting basic thermal and signal integrity analyses. Monthly, you will contribute to project deliverables such as prototype builds and test reports, tracking key metrics like power efficiency and data throughput. Expect to work closely with cross-functional teams including software engineers, firmware developers, and product managers to integrate hardware with Cisco's ecosystem. You may also support lab testing, documentation of findings, and iteration based on feedback, building skills in agile hardware development cycles.
To succeed in this role, candidates must be pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, with at least two years of academic coursework in digital and analog design. Prior co-op or internship experience in hardware engineering is highly preferred, along with proficiency in hardware description languages like Verilog or VHDL. Essential technical skills include hands-on experience with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and PCB design software such as Altium Designer or Cadence Allegro. Familiarity with networking protocols, RF fundamentals, and embedded systems is required. Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to learn quickly in a fast-paced environment are crucial.
Beyond technical prowess, you will thrive with excellent communication skills to articulate complex ideas in team meetings and documentation. Attention to detail, adaptability, and a collaborative mindset are key competencies, as is the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively. Industry knowledge of semiconductor trends and data center hardware will set you apart, fostering innovative contributions to Cisco's portfolio.
