Full Description

At Cisco, the Hardware Engineer I (Co-op) role offers an exciting entry point into the world of networking hardware innovation. As part of our dynamic engineering team in San Jose, you will contribute to the design, development, and testing of next-generation hardware solutions that drive connectivity for millions worldwide. This position is pivotal in advancing Cisco's mission to transform how people connect, communicate, and collaborate, providing real-world impact on groundbreaking technologies. In this co-op role, you will engage in daily tasks such as assisting in schematic capture and PCB layout using tools like Cadence Allegro, performing hardware prototyping and debugging with oscilloscopes and logic analyzers. Weekly, expect to collaborate with cross-functional teams including software engineers and product managers to integrate hardware components into larger systems, conduct signal integrity simulations, and document design specifications. Monthly deliverables may include contributing to design reviews, supporting lab testing for compliance with FCC and CE standards, and analyzing failure modes to improve reliability. You will work closely with senior engineers on projects involving high-speed interfaces like PCIe and Ethernet, participate in agile sprints for rapid prototyping, and track key metrics such as power consumption and thermal performance to ensure products meet performance benchmarks. Candidates must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, with at least two years of academic coursework in analog and digital design. Prior co-op or internship experience in hardware engineering is highly preferred, along with proficiency in hardware description languages like Verilog or VHDL. Essential technical skills include hands-on experience with lab equipment, familiarity with embedded systems, and knowledge of RF principles. Strong foundation in electromagnetics and power electronics is required, and any certifications in IPC standards or Six Sigma basics will be advantageous. Beyond technical prowess, success demands excellent problem-solving abilities, keen attention to detail, and effective communication skills for presenting findings in team meetings. You should thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative setting, demonstrating adaptability and a passion for learning complex systems. Industry competencies in networking protocols and data center hardware will set you apart, enabling seamless integration with Cisco's ecosystem. Cisco is a global leader in networking, cybersecurity, and digital transformation, with a mission to power an inclusive future for all. Our San Jose headquarters fosters a vibrant, innovative culture emphasizing work-life balance, diversity, and employee empowerment. Teams are structured in agile pods, promoting open collaboration in modern labs equipped with state-of-the-art tools, where creativity meets execution. We offer competitive compensation, though salary details are not specified at this time, paired with comprehensive benefits including health, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) matching, and life insurance. Perks include generous PTO, flexible hybrid work options, employee stock purchase plans, tuition reimbursement for ongoing education, and wellness programs. Co-op students enjoy mentorship and networking events to kickstart their careers. This co-op provides a launchpad for full-time roles at Cisco, with clear paths to senior engineering positions through rotational programs and leadership tracks. Professional growth is supported via Cisco University courses, certifications, and global project exposure. To apply, submit your resume and transcript via our careers portal today.
