Job Description
Join Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center as a Driver for Meals on Wheels in New York, NY. Deliver nutritious meals to homebound seniors, ensuring their well-being and independence in the community.
Full Description
At the Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center, our Driver for Meals on Wheels plays a vital role in supporting New York City's vulnerable senior population. This position involves safely transporting and delivering hot, nutritious meals to homebound individuals, directly contributing to their health, independence, and quality of life. By joining our team, you'll make a meaningful impact on the community, helping us fulfill our mission of providing essential services to those in need in Upper Manhattan.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will center on efficient and compassionate meal delivery operations. You'll start each shift by picking up prepared meals from our kitchen facility, carefully loading them into a company-provided vehicle while ensuring food safety standards are met. Routes will take you through local neighborhoods, where you'll deliver meals to approximately 20-30 seniors daily, verifying identities, checking on their well-being, and noting any concerns to report back to program coordinators. Weekly tasks include vehicle inspections, logging mileage and delivery metrics, and collaborating with kitchen staff and social workers to adjust routes based on client needs. Monthly, you'll participate in route optimization meetings, assist with inventory counts of delivery supplies, and contribute to program evaluations by tracking delivery success rates, aiming for 98% on-time performance. You'll also support special initiatives like holiday meal drives, working closely with volunteers and case managers to ensure seamless service during peak times. Safety protocols, such as wearing PPE and adhering to traffic regulations, are paramount in all tasks.
To succeed in this role, candidates must hold a valid New York State driver's license with a clean driving record spanning at least the past three years, and pass a background check and drug screening. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with prior experience in delivery driving or customer-facing roles, preferably in nonprofit or healthcare settings. Familiarity with GPS navigation tools, basic vehicle maintenance, and food handling safety practices is essential. Physical fitness to lift up to 50 pounds and navigate multi-story buildings without elevators is necessary, as is proficiency in English for client communication. Knowledge of New York City traffic patterns and senior care principles is highly valued.
Beyond technical requirements, we seek drivers with exceptional interpersonal skills, empathy, and cultural sensitivity to interact respectfully with diverse senior clients. Strong time management and problem-solving abilities ensure routes stay on schedule despite urban challenges. Reliability, attention to detail, and a passion for community service are core competencies, along with the adaptability to handle varying weather conditions and client emergencies calmly. Team players who communicate effectively with staff thrive in our collaborative environment.
The Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center, founded in 1965, is a beacon of support in East Harlem, offering programs in senior services, youth development, and workforce training. Our Meals on Wheels initiative serves over 200 clients weekly, embodying our values of compassion, equity, and empowerment. We foster a close-knit, mission-driven culture where staff collaborate in a dynamic, community-focused setting, with regular team-building events and a commitment to work-life balance.
We offer competitive compensation, though salary details are not specified at this time, commensurate with experience. Comprehensive benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, a 403(b) retirement plan with employer match, paid time off starting at 15 days annually, and flexible scheduling to accommodate personal needs. Additional perks feature professional development stipends, employee assistance programs, and opportunities for community recognition awards.
Growth-minded individuals will find ample advancement paths, from lead driver to program coordinator roles, supported by ongoing training in senior care and leadership. We encourage professional certifications and provide tuition reimbursement. To apply, submit your resume and cover letter via our careers page or email hr@isaacsnyc.org, and join us in making a difference.
