Job Description
Join ThisWay Global as a Fiber Optic Field Assistant, supporting the installation, maintenance, and testing of fiber optic networks across the United States. This full-time role offers hands-on experience in telecommunications, ensuring reliable connectivity for communities and businesses.
Full Description
ThisWay Global is seeking a dedicated Fiber Optic Field Assistant to join our dynamic telecommunications team. In this essential role, you will play a pivotal part in expanding and maintaining high-speed fiber optic infrastructure, directly contributing to the company's mission of delivering cutting-edge connectivity solutions nationwide. Your work will support seamless communication networks that power businesses, homes, and critical services, making a tangible impact on digital accessibility and reliability in the United States.
As a Fiber Optic Field Assistant, your day-to-day tasks will involve assisting skilled technicians in the physical installation of fiber optic cables, including pulling, splicing, and terminating fibers in various environments from urban settings to rural areas. You will conduct routine inspections and testing using tools like OTDRs and power meters to verify signal integrity and identify faults, performing daily cable routing and termination work on projects that span multiple sites weekly. Weekly responsibilities include preparing job sites, loading and unloading equipment from service vehicles, and documenting installation progress through detailed reports and photographs for project tracking. Monthly, you will participate in larger maintenance projects, collaborating with engineering teams and project managers to meet deliverables such as completing 50-100 fiber connections per project while adhering to safety metrics like zero incidents per 1,000 hours worked. You will also support inventory management by tracking tools and materials, assist in troubleshooting network outages, and coordinate with local authorities for site access, ensuring all tasks align with industry standards and company timelines.
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, with vocational training or an associate degree in telecommunications, electronics, or a related field strongly preferred. At least 1-2 years of hands-on experience in fiber optics, cabling, or field technician roles is required, including familiarity with fusion splicing, connectorization, and basic networking principles. Proficiency with industry-standard tools such as fiber cleavers, fusion splicers, OTDRs, and power meters is essential, along with knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and BICSI certifications like FOA (Fiber Optic Association) credentials. Experience working in diverse field conditions, including climbing ladders and working at heights, is necessary, as is a valid driver's license with a clean record for operating company vehicles across the United States.
Success in this role demands strong technical aptitude with fiber optic testing equipment and low-voltage cabling systems, coupled with physical stamina for demanding outdoor work. Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail will help you diagnose and resolve network issues efficiently, while effective communication ensures smooth collaboration with field crews, engineers, and clients. Adaptability to varying schedules, including on-call duties and travel, along with a safety-first mindset and teamwork orientation, are critical competencies that will set you apart in our fast-paced telecommunications environment.
