Job Description
Zirtual seeks a remote Legal Assistant specializing in Family & Criminal Law to provide essential support in Indianapolis, IN. Assist attorneys with case management, research, and client communications in this impactful non-profit volunteer role.
Full Description
Join Zirtual as a Family & Criminal Law Legal Assistant in a fully remote capacity, making a meaningful difference in the lives of clients navigating complex legal challenges. This vital role supports the delivery of justice through efficient administrative and paralegal assistance, directly contributing to the company's mission of accessible legal aid in Indiana. Your work will empower attorneys to focus on advocacy while ensuring smooth operations in high-stakes cases.
In your daily routine, you will prepare and file legal documents such as motions, pleadings, and affidavits for family law matters like divorces, child custody, and adoptions, as well as criminal defense filings including discovery requests and trial briefs. Weekly, conduct in-depth legal research using tools like Westlaw and LexisNexis to support case strategies, summarizing findings for attorneys. Manage client communications by scheduling consultations, gathering case details, and providing updates, all while maintaining strict confidentiality. Organize and maintain case files digitally, tracking deadlines and court dates to prevent misses. Assist in trial preparation by compiling exhibits, witness lists, and evidence binders. Collaborate with attorneys, paralegals, and court staff via virtual meetings and email, contributing to team strategy sessions. Monthly, generate reports on case progress and billable hours if applicable, ensuring compliance with Indiana court rules. Handle administrative tasks like transcription of depositions and correspondence drafting, delivering high accuracy under pressure.
Candidates must hold a high school diploma or equivalent, with an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies, or a related field strongly preferred. Prior experience of 2-3 years as a legal assistant or paralegal in family or criminal law is essential, particularly familiarity with Indiana statutes and procedures. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, legal case management software like Clio or MyCase, and e-filing systems is required. Knowledge of family law specifics such as child support calculations and domestic violence protections, alongside criminal law elements like arraignments and pleas, is crucial. Certification as a Certified Paralegal (CP) or notary public is advantageous.
Essential technical skills include advanced proficiency in legal research databases and document automation tools, ensuring efficient workflow in a remote setup. Strong organizational abilities to juggle multiple cases, paired with exceptional written and verbal communication for client interactions and court filings. Attention to detail prevents errors in sensitive legal work, while discretion upholds ethical standards. Problem-solving prowess aids in navigating urgent deadlines, and adaptability thrives in the dynamic legal environment. Tech-savviness with virtual collaboration platforms like Zoom and Slack supports seamless team integration.
Zirtual is a forward-thinking company providing virtual assistant services with a focus on legal support, committed to bridging access gaps in family and criminal law for underserved Indiana communities. Our mission emphasizes empathy, efficiency, and excellence, fostering a collaborative culture where remote team members thrive. The work environment promotes work-life balance, innovation in legal tech, and a supportive network of dedicated professionals passionate about justice.
Compensation is not specified, reflecting the non-profit volunteer nature of this opportunity, though meaningful experience and networking abound. Benefits include flexible remote scheduling, professional development resources, and community impact recognition. Perks encompass unlimited access to legal training webinars, wellness stipends, and generous PTO policies to support sustained engagement.
