Job Overview BigCommerce is seeking a seasoned Lead Software Engineer to join our remote engineering team. In this pivotal role, you will spearhead the development of robust, scalable e-commerce platforms that power thousands of businesses worldwide. As a technical leader, you'll collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-impact features, optimize performance, and champion best practices in software engineering. This position offers the flexibility of fully remote work, allowing you to contribute from anywhere while advancing our mission to democratize commerce. Key Responsibilities Guide engineering teams through complex projects, from ideation to deployment, ensuring alignment with business goals and technical excellence. Architect and implement scalable backend systems, microservices, and APIs using modern cloud-native technologies. Mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and foster a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing. Collaborate with product managers, designers, and stakeholders to translate requirements into innovative solutions. Drive technical initiatives such as system refactoring, performance optimization, and integration of AI/ML capabilities. Monitor production systems, troubleshoot issues, and implement proactive measures to maintain 99.99% uptime. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 3 years in a lead or senior capacity. Proven track record in building and leading high-performing engineering teams in fast-paced environments. Deep expertise in full-stack development, particularly in e-commerce or SaaS platforms. Skills Proficiency in languages like JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Go, or Java, with strong experience in Node.js, React, or similar frameworks. Expertise in cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure, including containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and serverless architectures. Strong knowledge of databases (SQL/NoSQL like PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis) and caching strategies. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Git, and agile methodologies. Excellent problem-solving abilities, with a focus on clean, testable code and design patterns. Experience with monitoring tools (Datadog, New Relic) and security best practices (OAuth, encryption). Outstanding communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
