Full Description

Job Overview: Peraton, a leading provider of technology solutions to the U.S. government and its allies, is seeking an experienced COBOL Software Developer to join our dynamic engineering team in Indiana. In this full-time role, you will play a pivotal part in developing, maintaining, and modernizing legacy mainframe applications that support critical national defense and intelligence operations. With a focus on reliability and performance, you will work on high-stakes projects that demand precision and deep technical knowledge in COBOL and related technologies. Key Responsibilities: Design and develop COBOL-based applications for IBM mainframe environments, including coding, testing, debugging, and deploying software solutions. Analyze existing systems to identify inefficiencies and implement enhancements or migrations to modern platforms. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including systems analysts, database administrators, and project managers, to gather requirements and deliver robust, scalable applications. Perform code reviews, unit testing, and integration testing to ensure compliance with security standards and performance benchmarks. Troubleshoot production issues, provide ongoing support, and document all development activities thoroughly. Participate in agile methodologies, contributing to sprint planning and continuous improvement initiatives. Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in COBOL programming, with proven expertise in mainframe development using tools like IBM z/OS, CICS, and IMS. Strong understanding of structured programming, data structures, and database management systems such as DB2 or VSAM. Experience with JCL, utilities, and mainframe debugging tools. U.S. citizenship required due to the nature of government contracts; ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance is essential. Skills: Proficiency in COBOL (including COBOL II and Enterprise COBOL), assembler language, and mainframe utilities. Knowledge of modern integration techniques like RESTful APIs, microservices, and cloud migration strategies for legacy systems. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and the capacity to work under tight deadlines. Strong communication skills for technical documentation and team collaboration. Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and version control systems such as Git or Endeavor is a plus. Company Info: Peraton is a premier mission-capable provider of systems engineering, integration, and sustainment solutions for defense, intelligence, and civilian markets. With over 20,000 employees worldwide, we deliver innovative technologies that protect and advance our nation's interests. Our Indiana office is at the heart of our engineering operations, fostering a collaborative environment equipped with state-of-the-art mainframe labs and development tools. Benefits: Peraton offers competitive compensation, comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) matching, paid time off, and tuition reimbursement. Employees enjoy flexible work arrangements, wellness programs, and access to professional development resources. Growth Opportunities: Advance your career through Peraton's robust training programs, certifications in emerging technologies, and clear paths to senior developer, architect, or leadership roles. We invest in your success with mentorship, conferences, and opportunities to work on cutting-edge projects that shape the future of defense technology.
